The 178B0236 variable-frequency drive produced by Danfoss belongs to the VLT 6000 HVAC Drives series. It is intended for fan, pump, and compressor control in building services where predictable airflow, pressure, and temperature regulation are required for energy management. Within an automation scheme, it converts fixed-frequency mains into a modulated output that matches real-time load demands, reducing motor wear during starts and speed changes. It can adjust motor speed instead of forcing full-speed operation at all times, which helps connected equipment respond more smoothly to changing occupancy or seasonal conditions.
It accepts a three-phase supply of 380-460 VAC, allowing one frame size to cover most commercial power systems. The inverter can deliver up to 4.0 kW / 5.0 HP of motor output, matching mid-range air handlers and small chilled-water pumps. Thermal losses are contained by its narrow book-style IP 20 housing, which supports dense panel layouts while maintaining finger-safe protection for indoor cabinet installation. Communication with supervisory controllers is handled through Profibus DP V1, enabling setpoint changes, status feedback, and coordinated control on the same network as other plant equipment. To minimize conducted and radiated noise, the drive includes an integrated Class A1 and B filter, so separate line filtering is often unnecessary in standard installations.
Operator interaction is simplified by an included Local Control Panel (LCP), which provides a text display and tactile keys for local parameter entry and routine operating changes. Because the device is tuned specifically for HVAC duty cycles, it includes operating functions suited to fan and pump applications without requiring external option cards for basic control tasks. The hardware is supplied as a standard unit, and there is no coating on the circuit boards, so the mounting environment should remain free of condensate or corrosive vapor. Clean, dry installation conditions help protect the electronics and support stable long-term operation.
