The 178B4145 frequency converter is produced by Danfoss within the VLT 5000 Frequency Converters series. Designed for industrial automation, the unit varies motor speed by adjusting output frequency and voltage, giving process equipment the ability to match load conditions and reduce energy use. It integrates into control panels where compact drives are needed to keep conveyors, pumps, and fans operating at precise speeds set by upstream controllers. By matching motor output to the actual process demand, it can reduce unnecessary full-speed operation and support smoother speed changes during routine machine cycles.

Control logic is handled by a process control card that accepts standard analog references and digital status signals, eliminating the need for an external regulator in most loops. This arrangement allows the drive to respond directly to common plant control signals in standalone process sections and in larger automated lines. The boards are supplied as non-coated boards, so installation inside a filtered cabinet is advisable when chemical vapors or high humidity are present. The unit uses a compact IP20 housing, which keeps overall width low while still preventing accidental contact with live parts. Power is drawn from a 380 to 500 V three-phase supply, matching typical 400 V mains found in production facilities. Under steady loading, the inverter supplies 15 kW with 110% overload capability, while for short intervals it can supply 11 kW and support 160% torque demand for constant-torque applications.

Electromagnetic interference is reduced by the integrated Class A1 and B filter, making the drive suitable for industrial and light commercial switchboards without external suppression components. Rapid stops are handled by a standard brake chopper, which diverts surplus DC-bus energy to a resistor to help prevent overvoltage faults during deceleration. The drive has no fieldbus option, and it also comes without an application option or a display. Configuration is carried out through the series' remote keypad or PC software, so settings are handled externally rather than through an onboard screen.
