VLT3542 by Danfoss

The VLT3542 is a variable frequency drive manufactured by Danfoss and placed within the VLT 3000 Variable Speed Drives series. Designed to regulate the speed of three-phase induction motors in industrial automation, the unit converts fixed mains power into a variable voltage and frequency output that matches real-time process demand. It serves as the controlling component between the plant supply and the motor, allowing energy savings, soft-start capability, and accurate torque control for conveyors, pumps, and general machinery.

Under full load, the drive draws a maximum input apparent power of 46.8 kVA and reaches an efficiency of 0.96, so only four percent of the electrical input is dissipated as heat. A line current of 48.6 A passes through terminals sized for up to 4 AWG conductors, and those terminals accept a three-phase mains window of 440/460/500 VAC (±10%). The installation guidelines permit two energizing cycles per minute, helping to limit inrush stress on breakers. Protection on the supply side is handled with a 60 A pre-fuse, and the control electronics are synchronized to either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. Continuous operation is supported from -10 °C to +40 °C, with 1.133 kW of thermal loss routed through the heat sink and forced-air path.

On the motor side, the inverter delivers a nominal output current of 54.0 A that can be modulated up to an output frequency ceiling of 120 Hz. For brief overloads, it can supply 59.6 A for 60 s, enabling acceleration of a rated load up to 40 HP without tripping. The rated motor voltage is identical to the incoming supply, so no isolation transformer is required. Frequency presets extend beyond the standard baseline, with selectable 87 Hz and 100 Hz settings that raise synchronous speed for constant-torque duty. Selectable higher-frequency settings also allow the drive to support applications that need increased motor speed above the standard base setting.
