The 178B8584 is an AC variable frequency drive produced by Danfoss for the VLT 2800 Low Voltage Drives series. It is installed between the plant's line supply and a three-phase induction motor to modulate output frequency and voltage, allowing precise speed control in automated process lines. By supplying a torque-regulated output, the drive supports conveyors, mixers, and other continuous-duty equipment that must accelerate, decelerate, or hold setpoints without mechanical gear changes.

The unit delivers a continuous mechanical output of 5.5 kW, equivalent to 7.5 HP, so it fits medium-size pumps and blowers. It accepts a line supply of 380-480 V with a nominal tolerance of ±10% at the standard 50/60 Hz utility frequency. Internally, it rectifies and inverts this three-line input to feed a 3-phase motor while monitoring current for overload protection. The housing uses the compact Bookstyle format, which saves panel width while maintaining service access. An ingress rating of IP20 allows safe mounting inside a control cabinet where incidental touch protection is adequate. A conformal varnish is applied to the circuit boards, providing a coated finish that helps protect copper traces from moisture and airborne contaminants.

Operator interaction is handled by the built-in display that uses SLCP keys for parameter entry and fault readout, eliminating the need for an external keypad. The hardware is supplied in the standard configuration with a brake, enabling controlled motor stopping on fast-acting loads. Because it is shipped without an RFI filter, external filter modules are required where conducted emissions must be limited. The drive is dedicated to general process duties, carries no optional application macro, and omits fieldbus hardware, so local terminal wiring or analog references are used for run and speed commands.
