Danfoss supplies the 178B5656 as a decentralized drive in the FCD 300 Micro Drives series. Mounted close to a motor, the unit regulates speed and torque in processing lines where compact field-installed controllers simplify wiring, reduce cabinet space, and shorten motor leads. Its primary role is to provide localized motor control for conveyors, mixers, and other continuous-duty stations in industrial automation. This layout also suits distributed machine sections where placing the controller near the load helps keep the installation compact.

The plastic-coated aluminum housing carries an IP66 rating, so the electronics remain sealed against dust and high-pressure washdown. Input power is accepted from a three-phase supply of 3x380-480 V, and the inverter section converts that energy into a constant output of 2.2 kW, which is equivalent to 3.0 HP. Communications and parameter access occur through the integrated DeviceNet interface, allowing setpoint changes and diagnostics over a single fieldbus trunk. To limit conducted emissions, the drive includes an RFI stage with an integral 1 A filter positioned ahead of the rectifier. A detachable display connector on the front allows a keypad or service tool to be connected for local adjustments without opening the enclosure.

Installation is handled through a wall-mount box with metric threads, so conduit and gland fittings match IEC cable practices. Control electronics are powered through the Extended 24 V external hardware option, which keeps the logic section active during main-line lockout. This helps preserve communication and control availability while the main power stage is isolated. The exterior has a standard coating that resists the mild chemicals commonly found in washdown processing areas.
