Danfoss manufactures the 178B2134, a decentralized variable-frequency unit in the FCD 300 Micro Drives series. Mounted close to a motor, this drive regulates speed and torque directly on conveyors, mixers, and other processing equipment, removing the need for cabinet-mounted inverters and reducing field wiring across the machine. In an automation line, the device converts fixed mains frequency into a user-defined output, allowing motor performance to match real-time load demands while maintaining a compact IP-rated package suited to washdown zones and other exposed production areas.

The drive delivers up to 0.37 kW, or 0.50 HP, of mechanical output, so it fits fractional-horsepower tasks common in food, beverage, and chemical plants. A three-phase input range of 3 x 380-480 V lets it connect directly to standard industrial mains without a step-down transformer. Its housing is rated IP66, which means dust-tight construction and protection against high-pressure water jets in production areas. Radio-frequency interference is attenuated by an integral 1 A filter, reducing conducted emissions on the supply lines. The standard coating resists routine cleaning agents in typical ambient conditions.

Communication is limited to hard-wired I/O because the unit is specified without fieldbus, simplifying use where a full network link is unnecessary. The housing includes no display on its front face, so control is handled through remote inputs or a host PLC. The power platform is extended (24 V ext.), allowing an auxiliary 24 V supply to keep the control electronics active during main-power lockout. Wiring is simplified by the lack of a terminal box, so connections land on pluggable terminals inside a machine junction box and the outline stays slim in tight installation spaces on processing equipment.
