EL2088 by Beckhoff

The EL2088 digital output terminal is manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It snaps into place beside a bus coupler and offers eight lines that actuate solenoids, relays, or indicator lamps. The unit converts logic signals from an EtherCAT master into power outputs close to the load, reducing the amount of field wiring required. It can share a terminal row with other I/O modules, helping conserve cabinet space and allowing the control system to be expanded with additional terminals.

Each channel switches up to 0.5 A, while the terminal supports a total current of 3 A across all channels. The switched supply is rated at 24 VDC, and the circuitry uses a low-side configuration with 0 V switching. The outputs support resistive, inductive, and lamp loads. Integrated overload resistance and short-circuit protection disconnect a faulted line without affecting the remaining channels. The terminal snaps onto a 35 mm DIN mounting rail, and its slim housing has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for installation inside a protected enclosure. The housing supports variable installation positions, allowing horizontal or vertical orientation to suit available space while maintaining access to the spring-clamp terminals and marking areas.

Control data reach the terminal through the internal EtherCAT backplane, and the electronics receive logic power via the E-bus, so only the load supply requires external wiring. In the process image, the module contributes 8 output bits, enabling the PLC to update every channel simultaneously within a single byte. Operational feedback is displayed on the front panel through 8 green LEDs, with each LED illuminating when its corresponding output is active. This arrangement provides direct visual status information without requiring separate diagnostic equipment. The overload and short-circuit safeguards isolate electrical faults at the affected channel, while the front indicators help operators identify output states in densely populated EtherCAT nodes.
