The OSP5020L is an operator interface and control module produced by Okuma as part of the OSP CNC Monitors series. It is intended to present machining status, accept operator commands, and coordinate data flow between the machine tool and the numerical control. By combining a cathode-ray display, dedicated processing electronics, and field wiring points, the unit forms the visual and computational hub of an Okuma lathe or mill, allowing real-time supervision of axis motion and auxiliary devices in automated production.

Its hardware base uses a 68000 microprocessor running at 15 MHz, a level of clock speed that balances deterministic cycle times with moderate heat dissipation inside the cabinet. Machine information is rendered on a 12 in CRT, and the nonvolatile program store can be expanded up to 32 Mbits (4 Mbytes) through the installation of two bubble-memory cards. Control logic and peripheral lines draw single-phase 220 VAC, simplifying supply wiring in retrofits. Two TCC-A channels provide resolver feedback, two solenoid outputs, and two contact inputs for spindle-related tasks, while the architecture can drive up to two turrets for multi-station turning. A shielded link using the RS-422 protocol is available for higher-noise shop floors.

Volatile storage is divided between the MC11 and MC12 boards; the MC11 slot accepts 512 Kbytes of high-speed RAM for real-time variables, and the MC12 slot provides 2 Mbytes for larger part programs and tool offset tables. Up to three MC11/MC12 cards can be seated simultaneously, giving flexibility when memory or backup redundancy is critical. Operator interaction is performed through 8 programmable soft keys located beneath the screen, and external equipment such as bar-feeders or gauging stations can connect through 4 independent RS-232C channels. An internal backplane recognizes the three-card limit, preventing configuration conflicts during field expansion.
