Installed next to an XM21 CPU, it serves as a Profibus master that coordinates field devices such as drives, remote I/O stations, and sensors on a single wiring segment. By adding this module, an XM21 controller gains deterministic exchange over the Profibus bus, allowing decentralized nodes to be managed with the same programming environment that handles motion, logic, and safety tasks inside an automated cell.

This module communicates through a PROFIBUS DP interface and is energized from the system backplane by a nominal supply of 24 V DC. Under full bus traffic, its electronics draw only 0.2 A, translating to a maximum thermal dissipation of 4.8 W; the low wattage simplifies cabinet ventilation. A replaceable back-mounted fuse rated at 4 A safeguards upstream wiring against internal shorts. Signals arrive via a 4-pin XD1 plug that carries power and logic reference, and the enclosure meets IP20, so the module must be mounted in a closed panel but does not require additional gasketing. The low power demand and enclosed-panel installation suit compact control racks where heat and wiring density must be managed carefully.

The device tolerates supply interruptions lasting 10 ms without a reset, preventing network dropouts during brief brownouts. Reverse polarity on the feed lines is blocked by a series diode, while suppressor diodes absorb switching transients from adjacent inductive loads. Field wiring attaches to the Profibus channel through a shielded 9-pin D-Sub socket, ensuring correct cable impedance and shielding continuity. Internal pin mapping routes +24 V to XD1 positions A1 and A2 and couples the ground reference to B1 and B2, simplifying consistent power distribution across multiple expansion slices.
