IKS4038 by Bosch Rexroth Indramat

The IKS4038 is an industrial encoder cable produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the IKS Encoder Cables series. It links feedback devices to drive controllers, carrying incremental or absolute position signals while preserving signal quality in servo axes and gantry stages. This arrangement supports closed-loop motion systems that depend on accurate position and speed feedback during continuous operation. It also helps keep encoder communication stable in automated equipment where electrical noise and repeated machine movement are common.

The cable is built as an Encoder Cable (Total Shield), so the signal conductors are protected by shielding that helps reduce electromagnetic interference. It has a D-sub 15-pin (socket) connector on the drive side and a M23 17-pin (socket) connector on the opposite end for direct connection to compatible encoder interfaces. Separate supply conductors feed the encoder electronics, while grouped signal pairs help limit crosstalk between channels. Even with this composite conductor layout, the cable keeps an outside diameter of 9.7 mm. For stationary routing, it can be bent to 5 x D without placing unnecessary stress on the jacket, and the orange sheath remains easy to identify inside cabinets and machine frames.

For moving cable-chain applications, the IKS4038 is rated for 5 million reciprocating bending cycles, which suits handling systems that travel back and forth throughout the workday. In dynamic service, the minimum bend radius increases to 7.5 x D to protect the shield, insulation, and conductor geometry during repeated motion. The copper conductors can operate at temperatures up to 80 °C, allowing the cable to work near motors, drives, and other warm equipment. The outer jacket is made of PUR, which provides abrasion resistance and helps the cable withstand oil and coolant exposure in industrial machine areas.
