M-3120 by Beckhoff

The M-3120 is a parallel I/O encoder interface module built by Beckhoff and assigned to the M Parallel IO Modules series. In motion-centric automation, this unit captures incremental encoder feedback and forwards position data to a field controller over the manufacturer's Lightbus network. By integrating counting logic, latch functions, and a fieldbus interface in one housing, the module eliminates discrete wiring and simplifies distributed axis monitoring. It serves as a compact bridge between incremental encoders and high-level PLC scan cycles.

The data path is organized around a 24-bit counter per channel, matched by an equal-width zero-latch register for synchronous position capture. The module accepts quadrature signals through a 15-pin D-SUB connector and supports 4 incremental encoder channels. Resolution scaling is selectable in 1×, 2×, or 4× evaluation modes, permitting trade-offs between bandwidth and precision. Communication with the higher-level bus master occurs through II/O Lightbus, where a complete 32-bit data word is transferred every 25 µs. The serial link operates at 2.5 Mbaud, providing consistent data exchange for coordinated motion tasks. Deterministic timing is maintained because the internal electronics are supplied with 24 V DC while drawing only 0.1 A of module current.

The compact aluminum housing measures 68 mm deep, 170 mm wide, and 76 mm high, allowing installation where panel space is limited. Its metal enclosure protects the internal counting and communication electronics while providing a rigid mounting surface. The front panel distributes encoder power, and a dedicated supply delivers up to 1 A in total for sensor excitation, allowing compatible transducers to operate without external regulators. Despite the metal housing, the unit weighs only 600 g, allowing DIN rail mounting without additional support. The enclosure width and D-SUB orientation provide practical clearance for cable routing inside control cabinets. Its low module current also reduces the load placed on the shared control-power supply.
