KL4002 by Beckhoff

The KL4002 is an analog I/O terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the KL Analog Output Terminals series. It serves as a field-level interface that converts control commands from a PLC into voltage references for drives, valve amplifiers, and other compatible devices used in distributed machine cells. Installed alongside digital and motion terminals on the same rail, the unit increases channel density by providing two independent voltage outputs without requiring a larger control cabinet. Its modular format allows the output channels to be placed close to connected equipment, which can reduce the length and complexity of field wiring.

The module provides an output range of 0 to 10 V, allowing proportional regulation of equipment that uses this standardized signal range. It contains two analog channels, allowing the PLC to control two separate devices from one terminal. Communication occurs over the Beckhoff K-Bus, which transfers process data between the terminal and the associated bus coupler without additional ribbon wiring. The compact enclosure measures 15 × 100 × 70 mm, conserving panel space while remaining accessible for removal from the terminal assembly. Each channel uses a digital-to-analog converter with 12-bit resolution, providing 4,096 discrete output levels for precise setpoint adjustments. The conversion system translates the process value supplied by the controller into a corresponding analog voltage at the assigned output.

The electronics receive power through auxiliary contacts rated for 24 VDC, enabling the terminal to share a common control supply with adjacent modules. For accurate conversion, the connected load must exceed 5 k?, which prevents excessive current demand on the output stage. The housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and its variable installation position permits horizontal or vertical mounting without derating. In the PLC memory, the terminal uses a 2 × 16-bit process image that stores output values and associated status information. Its IP20 enclosure rating provides protection against accidental contact with internal components but requires installation inside a suitable closed cabinet. The removable terminal format also allows access to neighboring modules without changing the established control wiring layout.
