KL1512 by Beckhoff

The KL1512 is an input terminal produced by Beckhoff within the KL Analog Input Modules series. It occupies one Bus Terminal slot and provides two independently countable channels, allowing a PLC to register incremental encoder signals, flow pulses, or positioning feedback directly at the I/O level. The terminal translates field pulses into digital values within the controller's process image, supporting high-resolution counting tasks in compact automation enclosures. Its two-channel design allows separate pulse sources to be monitored without requiring another terminal slot.

The module uses two up/down counters, allowing each channel to increment or decrement according to the direction of the incoming signal. Each counter has a depth of 16 bits, and its value is transferred to the controller as an unsigned 16-bit integer. Each channel draws an input current of 5 mA and supports a maximum switching rate of 1 kHz, enabling the terminal to follow rapid edge sequences. The rising edge is used as the valid response edge for synchronization with sensors that produce positive signal transitions. The process image contains two 16-bit data words and two 8-bit status bytes. The electrical interface complies with EN 61131-2 Type 1 requirements for compatibility with suitable sourcing field devices. The housing can be installed in any orientation, providing flexibility when arranging components inside a limited cabinet space.

The terminal draws 50 mA from the K-bus, so this load must be included when calculating the backplane power requirement. Its field inputs use a rated load voltage of 24 VDC, which matches common industrial sensor power supplies. The IP20 protection rating makes the terminal suitable for installation in clean, dry control enclosures where it is protected from moisture and excessive contamination. Its plastic housing clips onto a 35 mm DIN rail for secure mounting alongside compatible Bus Terminals. The removable wiring level and compact terminal format help preserve orderly signal routing while allowing access to adjacent I/O connections.
