It is intended for installation directly on machinery where harsh operating conditions or long cable routes make conventional cabinet wiring impractical. By mounting close to an incremental encoder, the device captures position counts and forwards them over the plant network, allowing a PLC or motion controller to respond to axis movement in real time. This placement reduces encoder cable lengths and helps preserve signal integrity within a distributed industrial automation system.

The module communicates through the CANopen fieldbus and inserts its data into the network cycle as two 16-bit count words and an 8-bit status and control byte. Each position value is stored in a 16-bit binary counter, while a separate 16-bit zero-pulse latch retains an index mark for reference resets. The interval resolution is 200 ns, providing precise timing for rapidly changing encoder signals. Signal edges can be processed at frequencies up to 1 MHz, allowing the module to capture high-speed shaft rotation without relying on software interpolation. The module has one channel, so its available sampling capacity is dedicated to a single incremental encoder. The resulting process data can be read by the controller at fixed fieldbus intervals, while the gate or latch input supports externally triggered counter operations.

Encoder wiring connects through an M23 screw-in, 12-pin connector, providing a secure interface for the feedback cable. A separate M12 receptacle accepts the gate or latch signal and allows an external event to synchronize the counter. Supply power and daisy-chain distribution use one M8, 4-pin feed and downstream connector, which allows power to continue to another compatible box unit. The integrated sensor supply provides up to 0.5 A at 5 VDC, so a typical incremental encoder can receive power directly from the module without a separate external rail. This local supply arrangement keeps sensor power and feedback wiring close to the encoder while the fieldbus connection carries counter values and status information to the control system.
