Beckhoff manufactures the IL2301-B520-0000 within the IL Coupler Box Units series. This coupler box provides a sealed, field-mountable interface that links discrete sensors and actuators to a higher-level controller. Its distributed design eliminates the need for a cabinet-mounted I/O rack and simplifies wiring across automated machinery.

The unit exchanges process data over the DeviceNet fieldbus, while its extension port passes additional channels through IP-Link. The extension interface uses optical fiber, preventing electrical noise from affecting signal integrity over long machine runs. Four digital inputs accept PNP proximity switches, and four digital outputs control 24 V devices such as valves or stack lights. The daisy-chain architecture connects I/O modules protected to IP65/66/67. The optical backbone can accommodate up to 120 extension modules before another coupler is required. The product is not programmable, and setup is limited to bus addressing. Any installation position is permitted, while two M3 mounting holes secure the housing directly to a machine frame. Polyurethane potting surrounds the electronics to insulate them from vibration and moisture during operation.

The gray enclosure is molded from PA6, providing resistance to oils and moderate impacts in industrial environments. Exposed metal components are made from nickel-plated brass for corrosion resistance. Eight sensor and actuator lines terminate through an M8 bolted connector system, which helps prevent accidental cable release during maintenance. Internal spring contacts are made from a gold-plated CuZn alloy, reducing contact resistance and oxidation over repeated mating cycles. The fully potted core protects the internal electronics from contaminants without requiring additional internal gaskets. Its compact field-mounted enclosure also keeps signal connections close to connected sensors and actuators, reducing the length of individual device cables.
