IE4132 by Beckhoff

The IE4132 extension box unit is manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the IE Extension Box Units series. Intended for distributed automation, the device accepts fieldbus data and produces analog voltages directly beside actuators, minimizing panel wiring and improving signal integrity. With its metal housing and surface-mountable form, the module integrates into machine structures and provides a localized interface between the central PLC and electrical loads that require proportional voltage control. By moving the conversion electronics into the field, it shortens shielded cable runs and supports the high modularity expected in modern assembly lines.

During operation, the unit acts as an analog voltage output stage. Digital words arriving from the controller are converted to analog levels in less than 4 ms, providing an effective update rate of 250 Hz for moderate-speed control loops. The process image has a width of 4 × 16 bits, so each channel carries a full-scale setpoint and status bits. Loads connected to the outputs must have an impedance of more than 5 k?, allowing the internal amplifier to maintain accuracy without excessive current draw. The unit has four channels, each isolated from the common 24 V supply. The channels share a mutual reference because electrical isolation is not provided between individual outputs.

Field wiring leaves the module through an M12 screw-in connector that secures conductors against vibration. The actuator power rail identified as load voltage UP feeds the output stage, while a separate control-voltage bus supplies the converter logic. Bus power enters through a 1 × M8 four-pin feed-through connection and passes to the next node through a daisy-chain port with one M8 four-pin socket. The fieldbus side includes electrical isolation appropriate for the selected network, helping prevent ground loops when mixed supply domains are present.
