The IE2808-0001 extension box is produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. Designed for factory lines where discrete sensors and actuators must be clustered away from the main cabinet, the module expands an IP-Link fieldbus segment with additional digital outputs and returns status data to the controller. Locating power switching close to the machine reduces cable runs and simplifies decentralized automation layouts.

Power distribution is based on a rated load voltage of 24 VDC, supplied through one 4-pole M8 male feed connector that also carries the IP-Link communication lines. Each of the eight protected output channels can deliver 0.5 A, while the entire unit is limited to 4 A. If a load is short-circuited, an electronic limiter restricts the current to 1.5 A until the fault is cleared. The internal logic draws only 5 mA per channel, allowing most of the available current to reach the connected field devices. Reverse-polarity protection helps prevent damage caused by incorrect supply wiring. The error reset mode can be configured for manual or automatic operation according to the needs of the control system.

The mechanical interface uses a UNC thread pattern, so standard North American mounting hardware can secure the housing in any orientation. Its variable installation position allows the module to fit within confined machine frames. A single 4-pole M8 female downstream connector continues power and IP-Link communication to the next device in the fieldbus segment. The process image allocates 16 output bits and 16 input bits for command and status data exchanged with the controller. The physical output lines leave the module through a 25-pin D-Sub socket, supporting organized connections through a shielded multicore cable. An optional control and status byte provides additional diagnostic information, while built-in isolation on the IP-Link fieldbus helps protect the controller when the outputs switch resistive, inductive, or lamp loads.
