IE2808 by Beckhoff

The IE2808 is an extension box unit produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. Designed for decentralized installation, the module expands a machine's digital I/O capacity through the IP-Link fieldbus and delivers protected 24-volt switching to actuators. By packaging the electronics in a compact, field-mounted enclosure, the device allows machine builders to place output channels close to sensors and loads while maintaining reliable communication with the controller.

Threaded mounts follow the UNC profile, allowing the housing to be fastened to common structural frames without adapters. On the signal side, a diagnostic input width of 16 bits gives the controller fault status for every channel, while IP-Link provides galvanic isolation for the fieldbus. The downstream connection uses an M8 female socket with four poles, while the rated supply of 24 V DC supports standard industrial power rails. Each output can source up to 0.5 A per channel and has individual short-circuit protection. Faults can be cleared through either manual or automatic error-reset routines. The housing supports multiple installation positions, allowing it to be oriented to suit cable routes.

Current draw is limited to 5 mA per channel, so the unit places minimal load on the upstream power supply before its outputs are switched. The sixteen outputs have a combined current limit of 4 A, and an internal electronic fuse trips at a short-circuit threshold of 1.5 A to protect the wiring. Switched lines exit through a 25-pin D-Sub connector, while the incoming 24 V feed uses an M8 male socket with four poles. This power connection also supports daisy-chain distribution to additional devices. Reverse-polarity protection helps prevent damage if the supply conductors are connected incorrectly. A 16-bit process image is presented to the PLC, allowing every channel state to be updated within a single bus cycle.
