IE2403 by Beckhoff

The IE2403 extension I/O module is produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a decentralized signal terminal that attaches to an EtherCAT network through IP-Link, isolating the control fieldbus from the local power distribution. By concentrating discrete sensor and actuator wiring in a single enclosure, the device lowers panel complexity and delivers real-time process bits to the main PLC for machinery such as conveyors, pick-and-place heads, and compact assembly presses.

Sixteen channels are arranged symmetrically as 8 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs, matching the 8-input and 8-output process image mapped into the PLC. The input stages draw 6 mA each, while the output drivers provide an output current of 0.5 A per channel at the module's rated load voltage of 24 VDC. Each driver's electronics add 20 mA of load current consumption, so supply sizing must account for both the external coils and the internal circuitry. A built-in sensor supply provides 0.5 A per channel on the same rail, allowing proximity switches to be powered locally. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, providing finger-safe construction but no resistance to liquid ingress and requiring cabinet placement in humid areas.

Field integration is simplified by one M8 socket that carries the downstream IP-Link signal. Control-fieldbus isolation is inherent to this optical interface, so ground faults on the 24 V side do not propagate into the network. Each input passes through a 3.0 ms input filter, providing debounce without external RC networks, and steady-state sensing requires only 6 mA of input current. During fault conditions, the output stage limits delivery to a short-circuit current of 1.5 A, protecting the wiring until upstream fuses trip. A separate M8 power-feed connector and a KM Connector ZS2001 for signals complete the wiring arrangement.
