IE2302 by Beckhoff

The IE2302 extension box is produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. It functions as a decentralized I/O module that places digital signal acquisition and output directly on machinery, reducing panel wiring in distributed automation. The unit links to the system bus through a single trunk cable, giving controllers immediate access to remote channels for sensors, limit switches, and small actuators located in harsh production areas. Its decentralized arrangement allows field devices to connect near their installation points instead of requiring individual wiring runs back to a central control cabinet.

Signals are arranged as 4 inputs and 4 outputs, so the process image occupies 4 bits of input data and 4 bits of output data inside the controller. Each input draws only 6 mA, and a built-in 3.0 ms filter removes contact bounce before the state is forwarded. The input stage complies with EN 61131-2 Type 2, allowing the use of proximity sensors that switch to the positive or negative rail. The logic electronics consume 20 mA per channel, and actuators connect through rugged M12 screw-in sockets. Field power and communication are daisy-chained through a single 4-pin M8 connector, reducing the number of separate cables required across the machine. Reverse-polarity protection guards the circuitry against an incorrectly connected power supply. The module supports variable mounting orientations to accommodate confined installation spaces.

The output side is powered by 24 VDC, and the output current is limited to 0.5 A per channel. The integrated sensor supply provides stable voltage to connected peripheral devices. Electronic protection limits the short-circuit current to 1.5 A, helping prevent damage during an output fault. The enclosure meets IP65/IP66/IP67 protection levels, permitting direct installation on tooling or conveyors without a separate cabinet. This sealing protects the internal electronics against dust, water jets, and temporary immersion under the conditions associated with those protection levels. The process image, load voltage, and short-circuit protection continue to operate when the module is exposed to vibration or spray within its permitted operating conditions.
