IE2301-0000 by Beckhoff

The IE2301-0000 is an I/O extension box manufactured by Beckhoff for the IE Extension Box Units series. The device functions as a compact field module that brings cabinet-level digital I/O directly onto machinery, where it can be connected through a downstream M8 socket to additional nodes. Separate signal and power feed connectors use M8 screw-in technology, simplifying the installation of sensors and actuators that operate on the standard 24-volt control supply used in automated conveyors, robotic tooling, and material-handling stations.

The module provides 4 digital inputs that each draw only 6 mA of input current. The input signals pass through a 3.0 ms input filter that suppresses contact chatter and other brief signal disturbances. On the output side, the module provides 4 digital outputs that switch loads referenced to a 24 VDC rated load voltage, matching the supply used by many proximity sensors and industrial actuators. Inverse-polarity protection helps prevent damage if the incoming voltage is wired backward. The module draws 20 mA from the sensor supply for its internal logic, while the field connections support devices installed directly on the machine.

The actuator drivers are rated for a 0.5 A maximum output current and include electronic current limiting that caps short-circuit current at 1.5 A. The box exchanges data with the controller through a 4-bit input and 4-bit output process image that maps each channel to a separate bit, enabling deterministic fieldbus updates. A galvanically separated design provides isolation between the control/fieldbus circuitry and field connections. The short-circuit-proof outputs resume normal operation after the fault has been cleared. Downstream expansion uses a four-pin M8 socket, while the primary power feed enters through a four-pin M8 connector. This connection arrangement supports a daisy-chain topology that reduces the required trunk cable length.
