IE2301 by Beckhoff

The IE2301 extension box is an IP-rated I/O module produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. Designed for decentralized control systems, the device supplies eight digital channels so a controller can read sensors and drive actuators directly on a machine frame. Its cast-metal housing and molded connectors allow it to be mounted beside tooling, reducing long wire runs and simplifying the expansion of fieldbus segments in industrial automation.

Each channel operates from a 24 VDC supply, and the module provides four inputs and four outputs that are transferred to the master through a four-bit input and four-bit output process image. The outputs can switch up to 0.5 A per channel, supporting solenoids or indicator lamps, while integrated fieldbus isolation prevents ground loops between remote drops and the control cabinet. The enclosure carries an IP65/IP66/IP67 protection rating, so production coolant and dust do not impair operation. Supported loads include resistive, inductive, and lamp loads. Reverse-polarity protection prevents accidental power reversal from damaging the electronics, and the variable installation position accommodates horizontal or vertical machine surfaces. Power enters through one M8 connector and passes through a second four-pin socket for daisy-chaining additional boxes.

The input side draws 6 mA per signal and uses a 3.0 ms filter, allowing transient noise from contact switches to be rejected before it reaches the controller. The internal electronics draw 20 mA from the control supply, while the sensor connections provide 24 V power for attached devices. Each output supports its stated operating current and uses a protection circuit that limits fault current to 1.5 A, helping prevent damage to the module and connected wiring. All I/O sockets use M8 screw-in connectors, providing vibration-resistant connections that match the four-pin power link. Reverse-polarity and short-circuit safeguards protect the unit during frequent tool changes and operation with mobile cable carriers.
