IE2300 by Beckhoff

The IE2300 extension box is produced by Beckhoff as part of the IE Extension Box Units series. It brings digital I/O to the machine frame through a compact metal housing that attaches directly to structural profiles. The device serves as a field-level node that connects sensors and actuators to an EtherCAT network. This arrangement allows controllers to place the I/O cluster close to the process and minimize trunk cabling in automated assembly, packaging, and material-handling lines.

At the logic layer, the module provides 4 inputs and 4 outputs, and this layout is mirrored in a process image of 4 bits in and 4 bits out that the PLC scans during each cycle. All channels share a rated supply of 24 VDC, so standard PNP proximity sensors and solenoid coils can operate without external converters. Each output can source up to 0.5 A per channel, providing sufficient current for small pneumatic valves or indicator lamps. The individual input paths draw only 6 mA from the connected sensors. An input filter of 3.0 ms suppresses contact bounce and high-frequency noise, preventing rapidly toggling devices from generating false transitions.

For energy budgeting, the output stages draw 20 mA per channel under no-load conditions. The unit limits the continuous sensor feed to its rated per-point current so that cable heating remains within IEC limits. Reverse-polarity diodes protect every circuit, and a factory-installed isolation barrier provides fieldbus isolation between the EtherCAT segment and the power plane. A short-circuit trip at 1.5 A limits overcurrent events, while the outputs support inductive, resistive, and lamp loads without derating. Downstream devices receive power through one M8 feed connector and one M8 downstream connector. Field wiring fits into an 8 mm quick-fit sleeve for a secure connection during installation.
