Beckhoff manufactures the IE2042-0000 I/O extension box within the IE Extension Box Units series. This compact block distributes discrete output channels directly on the machine, minimizing control-cabinet wiring and supporting modular installations. By presenting the outputs through field-level connectors, the unit allows a centralized PLC to switch actuators such as valves or stack lights while withstanding contamination and vibration. Built-in isolation separates the fieldbus side from the output power domain, maintaining signal integrity in industrial automation environments.

Designed for a nominal supply of 24 VDC, the device provides 8 output bits in the controller's process image. Each channel can source up to 2.0 A, permitting direct operation of magnetic coils without interposing relays. Three internally separated load circuits enable group fusing and power segmentation. Output power leaves the housing through M12 screw-in connectors that provide secure, IP-rated connections. The outputs support resistive, inductive, and lamp loads, while built-in reverse-polarity protection prevents damage from incorrect wiring. Galvanic isolation between the electronics and fieldbus helps eliminate ground loops and supports stable switching.

For auxiliary sensors, each channel delivers up to 0.5 A, and the distribution is protected by a maximum short-circuit current of 4.0 A that activates the internal current-limiting stages. Power-feed loops are implemented through two 4-pin M8 connectors, simplifying daisy-chaining while allowing a cumulative load of 12 A across all circuits. No downstream communication port is present, so the box typically terminates the field segment. The electronics draw only 50 mA per channel for operation, leaving most of the available power for connected field devices. Short-circuit-resistant switching, reverse-polarity tolerance, and automatic diagnostics support decentralized I/O systems exposed to frequent connector cycling and varying inductive loads.
