The IE2022-0000 extension box is produced by Beckhoff for the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a decentralized output module that places switching power next to actuators, reducing control cabinet wiring in industrial automation cells. The enclosure accepts 24 V field power and relays it to connected loads under EtherCAT supervision when combined with a suitable master. Because the enclosure is IP-rated for machine-side installation, it can be fastened to steel framing, conveyors, or tooling wherever compact digital outputs are required. This arrangement allows solenoids, lamps, and contactors to be driven without long home-run cables.

The unit operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC. It provides 8 digital outputs, each rated at 2.0 A per channel, and the total load must not exceed 4 A. Within the controller's memory map, it occupies a single 8-bit output image, ensuring byte-aligned access. Electrical terminations use an M12 screw-in connector that seals against oil and dust on the shop floor. There is no channel or interchannel isolation, so all outputs share a common reference, while the control and fieldbus circuits remain galvanically separated. A short-circuit threshold of 4.0 A disables a faulted path to protect upstream conductors. Control and fieldbus isolation helps maintain communication integrity during load transients. The variable installation position allows the housing to be mounted flat or on its edge without derating.

Each output stage draws 30 mA per channel for its internal electronics, and the auxiliary sensor rail can supply up to 0.5 A per channel for proximity switches or encoders. Downstream expansion is supported by one 4-pin M8 socket, while upstream field power enters through one 4-pin M8 connector. These feeder and daisy-chain connections allow additional IE boxes to be cascaded along the machine. The compact connections also help route field power through confined areas where larger connector assemblies would interfere with nearby equipment. Connected devices share the available supply limits, so the combined load must remain within the permitted current for the module and its individual channels.
