IE1012 by Beckhoff

The IE1012 is a field-mountable digital input module from Beckhoff that belongs to the IE Extension Box Units series. As an I/O island, it captures discrete sensor states on machines and delivers them to EtherCAT or other fieldbus controllers through its integrated bus circuitry. The device provides front-line signal collection in industrial automation, allowing decentralized placement close to switches or proximity detectors and reducing the amount of wiring routed back to the main cabinet.

Each channel is configured as a 24 VDC digital input that draws only 6 mA from the connected sensor. The integrated hardware filter has a response time of 0.2 ms and suppresses contact bounce so the controller receives a clean signal image. Internally, the signals are copied into an 8-bit input process image that is exchanged with the master at the configured bus cycle time. Channel-to-channel isolation and channel-to-control isolation are omitted to conserve space, but the unit still provides galvanic separation between the electronics and the fieldbus line. The compact housing contains 8 discrete inputs, allowing multiple sensors to connect without additional terminal blocks.

The downstream EtherCAT segment is routed through one 4-pin M8 socket, and the module accepts auxiliary power through one 4-pin M8 connector that also supplies sensor voltage. The sensor supply can source up to 0.5 A per channel and is short-circuit-protected, so a wiring fault on one device does not interrupt the remaining inputs. Sensor power is derived directly from the control voltage rail, simplifying cabinet fusing and external power distribution. Control-to-fieldbus isolation protects upstream electronics from electrical noise even though the individual input paths share a common reference. The input side uses an M12 screw-in header that provides a vibration-resistant connection in demanding industrial environments.
