IE1011 by Beckhoff

The IE1011 is an extension box unit produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. It serves as a distributed I/O node that brings sensor signals from the field into an EtherCAT strand or a comparable automation network without requiring a local control cabinet. Designed for mounting directly on machines, the housing carries eight discrete input channels and routes power, bus, and signal lines through sealed M8 connectors, allowing the module to collect switching information in environments where space is limited.

The module operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC, matching the standard logic level used by most sensors and actuators in machinery. It offers 8 input points, so a single block can handle multiple limit switches or proximity devices. Each channel draws only 6 mA, reducing the load on upstream power supplies and permitting long cable runs. A built-in debounce stage provides a fixed 0.2 ms input filter that suppresses contact bounce before data is placed in the controller memory. Downstream communication to the next device passes through one 4-pin M8 socket, maintaining the topology of the extension chain without additional breakout hardware.

Upstream sensors can be powered locally because the unit supplies up to 0.5 A per channel through the internal power rails. Incoming operating voltage reaches the electronics through one 4-pin M8 connector, keeping higher-current paths away from delicate signal pins. For network integrity, fieldbus isolation separates the logic ground from external noise. The unit has no interchannel isolation, so all inputs share a common reference, simplifying wiring for compatible PNP or NPN sensors. The process image exposes one byte, or eight input bits, to the PLC. Its flexible installation position allows the box to be fastened horizontally or vertically beside actuators or along cable trays.
