IE1000-0000 by Beckhoff

The IE1000-0000 digital input box is produced by Beckhoff within the IE Extension Box Units series. The device aggregates sensor contacts on the machine surface and conveys them to a higher-level controller through the integrated EtherCAT network, allowing discrete monitoring without routing every cable back to the cabinet. Its compact cast-metal housing and fully potted electronics allow it to be mounted directly on robots, conveyors, or tooling fixtures. Acting purely as remote I/O, it transfers each field signal to the PLC process image without local logic.

Each of the eight input channels operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC and draws only 6 mA, minimizing the load on sensor outputs. A fixed debounce period of 3.0 ms is built in, so mechanical contacts reach the controller after contact chatter has been filtered. The channels share a common power return, and there is no galvanic isolation between the channels or between the channels and the control ground. Dedicated insulation separates the control electronics from the fieldbus lines. Downstream data and power are routed through one 4-pin M8 socket that continues the network, while the primary supply arrives through a separate one 4-pin M8 connector, supporting daisy-chain topologies on the machine.

Sealing to IP65/IP66/IP67 allows the unit to tolerate dust, cutting fluids, and washdown procedures without an auxiliary enclosure. Within the process data map, it contributes a compact image of 8 input bits, simplifying address allocation when multiple boxes are connected to the same network. Each input can power its connected sensor from the control voltage rail. The available current per point reaches 0.5 A per channel, providing sufficient capacity for inductive switches or optically isolated sources. Control-to-fieldbus isolation further shields the upstream CPU from conducted electrical noise.
