EPP2308-0002 by Beckhoff

The EPP2308-0002 is an eight-channel digital output module produced by Beckhoff within the EPP EtherCAT P Box Modules series. Functionally, it extends field devices with switched 24 V lines that can be placed directly on machinery while remaining on the same real-time network as the controller. By combining communication and power on one hybrid trunk, the unit simplifies distributed automation layouts and minimizes cabinet wiring.

The module exchanges cyclic data over EtherCAT P, so a single cable delivers both logic power and protocol traffic. Its supply and signal connector uses a 4-pin layout that matches the EtherCAT P standard. Output stages are connected to a common 24 V DC source, and each channel can supply up to 0.5 A to actuators, indicators, or pilot relays. Internally, state information is packed into a compact 8-bit process image, allowing deterministic updates during every communication cycle. The output transistors use a positive-switching topology, so the load side is energized when the control bit is high. Distributed clock support keeps update skew in the nanosecond range, which supports synchronized motion or coordinated lighting patterns. The outputs accept resistive, inductive, and lamp loads without derating, and built-in freewheeling paths protect against inductive voltage spikes.

Eight discrete lines are presented on the front face, providing 8 outputs that can be wired with industry-standard M8 sockets. Each channel is monitored individually. If a fault causes excessive current, the driver switches off almost instantly because of the module's short-circuit-proof design. Status bits notify the PLC so that the control system can respond without manual inspection. The module's diagnostic functions allow the controller to identify affected channels while the remaining outputs continue to exchange process data.
