EP3182-1002 by Beckhoff

The EP3182-1002 is an EtherCAT-based digital input module produced by Beckhoff for the EP Digital Input Modules series. Installed directly on the machine frame, it acquires low-level sensor signals and transfers them to the controller through the real-time fieldbus. The device combines analog sampling and discrete switching in a single enclosure, allowing decentralized data acquisition in industrial automation lines that use IP-rated, plug-and-play M-coded cabling.

Signal pickup is handled through two 5-pin M12 sockets that accept two single-ended channels. The internal converter delivers a resolution of 16 bits, including the sign, and the total error stays within 0.3% of full scale. To protect upstream transducers, the input stage provides at least 200 k? of resistance and supports sensor leads up to 30 m in length. Electrical isolation of 500 V separates the field side from the supply, while an additional dielectric strength of 30 V protects adjacent lines on the circuit board. Communication with neighboring modules continues over a dual EtherCAT trunk that terminates in two 4-pin M8 sockets. This connection arrangement supports ring or line topologies without requiring external hubs.

On the output side, the unit provides two discrete channels that can operate in sink or source mode and deliver up to 2 mA per channel. Both the switched lines and the internal logic are referenced to a common 24 VDC rail, and the shared supply can furnish a maximum aggregate load of 4 A to downstream modules. This arrangement allows the EP3182-1002 to report limit-switch states while simultaneously activating low-current indicators from the same two-channel block without extra relays. The digital outputs leave the housing through the M12 connectors. Their state data is forwarded through the two EtherCAT ports so that controller task cycles remain synchronized with field activity.
