EP1258-0502 by Beckhoff

The EP1258-0502 is a compact digital input module from Beckhoff for the EP Digital Input Modules series. It accepts digital field signals and places them directly on an EtherCAT network, allowing controllers to timestamp machine states with microsecond precision. In automated cells, the unit can be installed close to sensors to reduce wiring runs, while its molded polyamide body withstands vibration on moving tooling. Its decentralized design supports applications such as high-speed inspection, material handling, and coordinated machine control.

The module operates at a nominal control voltage of 24 V DC, and its input channels recognize logical HIGH signals in accordance with EN 61131-2 Type 1/3. The internal electronics draw only 120 mA from the system supply, leaving power available for additional network nodes. Each M8 socket provides two input channels, and the fully shielded design helps maintain signal integrity near motors, drives, and welding equipment. Communication uses the EtherCAT real-time protocol, permitting deterministic transfer of recorded edge times to the PLC through standard network cabling. The housing measures 30 mm × 126 mm × 26.5 mm, allowing the module to fit alongside actuators on robot arms, conveyor frames, and other space-constrained machinery.

The module provides eight discrete inputs for monitoring sensors, switches, and other binary field devices. It can supply connected sensors with up to 0.5 A through the three-way M12 supply connections. Support for Distributed Clocks allows multiple EtherCAT nodes to share a common time base with nanosecond-level synchronization, which is useful for coordinated motion and high-speed inspection. The Multi-Timestamp function records up to 32 rising or falling edges between bus cycles, preventing rapid signal changes from being lost when inputs toggle faster than the network update period. Two M3 fixing holes support secure installation on mounting plates or extrusion slots. The PA6 enclosure, shielded M8 bus connectors, and EN-compliant input circuitry provide durable mechanical protection and stable electrical connections for decentralized equipment.
