The ELX3204-0090 temperature input terminal is produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It mounts on a DIN rail and forwards resistance temperature detector data to the EtherCAT fieldbus so PLCs can monitor thermal conditions. The module provides intrinsically safe measurement channels that allow direct connection of approved RTDs in process automation environments where hazardous-area wiring must remain below the energy limits established for Ex zones.
It offers 4 differential inputs that use a 2-wire technique to read Pt100 sensors by default while also accepting Pt200, Pt500, Pt1000, Ni100, Ni120, and Ni1000 elements. Each channel appears in the process image as one of four 32-bit RTD values and samples at a default conversion time of 270 ms. The internal analog-to-digital converter resolves temperature changes down to 0.1 °C/digit, and its analog front end filters signals up to 1 kHz to suppress unwanted noise. Linearity and component tolerances keep the total measurement error below ±0.3% FSV, with less than 1 mA of sensor current and an internal resistance of at least 10 k?. The intrinsic safety parameters include a field-interface voltage of 4.94 V, a current limit of 12 mA, and a maximum power release of 15 mW.
System integration is handled through the EtherCAT E-bus, which supplies 5 VDC to the terminal logic. The galvanically isolated power contacts provide 24 VDC Ex for downstream modules while preserving the energy restrictions of the hazardous segment. The terminal has a fixed cyclic redundancy check value of 8. TwinSAFE SC support is available for four channels that deliver four INT16 values, and configurable TSC settings are available at index 8040 for functional safety diagnostics. The housing measures 15 × 100 × 70 mm and has an IP20 protection rating for cabinet-mounted installations.
