EL9181 by Beckhoff

The EL9181 is a potential distribution terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Within an I/O station, it routes auxiliary power and ground connections to adjacent signal terminals, allowing field devices to share a common supply without separate distribution wiring. The unit occupies a single slot on a DIN rail and contains no user-visible process data. It functions as an infrastructure component rather than a terminal that sources or receives logical signals.

The housing measures 12 mm wide, conserving cabinet space while providing eight power contacts for each potential. Its internally bridged contacts support a maximum continuous load of 10 A. The direct plug-in connection method accommodates solid conductors, while the EtherCAT E-bus and separate power contacts pass directly through the module. Electrical insulation between the galvanically isolated groups withstands up to 500 V, and each group can carry up to 60 VDC. The IP20 protection category makes the terminal suitable for installation inside closed control enclosures. Its process image width is 0 bits because the terminal does not exchange control or status data with the EtherCAT network.

The body attaches to a standard 35 mm mounting rail and can be installed in any orientation to accommodate different cabinet layouts. Sixteen terminal points are arranged in two rows, with eight points assigned to each of the two distinct potentials. This arrangement keeps the bus and auxiliary conductors partitioned in systems that use separate supply groups. The device tolerates up to 95% relative humidity when condensation is prevented, allowing operation in a range of enclosed industrial environments. Because the terminal has no protective earth contact, the machine wiring must provide a separate protective earth connection wherever one is required.
