The EL4134 is an analog output EtherCAT terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It converts digital commands from the network into precise voltage levels, allowing PLCs to control proportional actuators, signal conditioners, or measurement equipment directly through the EtherCAT backplane. In industrial automation, the module provides deterministic signal generation without the external wiring normally required for separate analog cards. Its compact terminal format also allows the output points to be installed alongside other EtherCAT I/O modules in a control cabinet.
The maximum conversion rate is 4 kSps when Distributed Clocks are disabled, while activating this synchronization feature changes the upper rate to 2.5 kSps. Output words are processed at a resolution of 16 bits, providing 65,536 discrete steps across the commanded voltage range. The terminal writes and refreshes its outputs simultaneously, so every channel updates in lockstep for coordinated multi-axis motion or synchronized signal testing. Process data appear in the controller image as one entry per channel, simplifying scaling and data handling within the control program. Protection against contact and solid particles meets the IP20 rating, making the terminal suitable for installation inside a protected control cabinet.
EtherCAT operation requires a cycle time of 250 µs without Distributed Clocks and 400 µs when they are enabled. The terminal provides 4 single-ended outputs referenced to ground, and each output can source up to 40 mA for connection to compatible voltage-controlled devices. Both the electronics and output stages receive power exclusively through the E-bus, eliminating the need for external power jumpers within the I/O row. The output circuits are protected against short circuits, reducing the risk of damage to the digital-to-analog converters if a connected load develops a fault. Built-in fault detection monitors output operation and supports rapid identification of abnormal load conditions. The synchronized conversion process keeps the commanded signals aligned with the applicable EtherCAT cycle timing.
