EL4038 by Beckhoff

The EL4038 is an analog output terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It functions as an I/O module that transfers setpoint values from the EtherCAT network to connected actuators. The terminal converts digital commands from the controller into analog signals used for process regulation, motion commands, and instrumentation loops. Its distributed architecture allows analog outputs to be positioned near field devices, which can reduce the length and complexity of signal wiring inside automated machinery.

The terminal provides 8 single-ended output channels, with each channel converting data at a resolution of 12-bit. Output values are updated through the process image, where one 16-bit word is assigned to each channel for direct access by the PLC. The channel electronics receive power through the EtherCAT backplane, while the output stage operates from a 24 VDC field supply. Integrated short-circuit protection helps protect the device against output wiring faults. The housing has an IP20 rating and is intended for installation inside a suitable control cabinet. A single-ended topology connects the outputs to a common ground, making the terminal suitable for actuators and instruments that use a shared signal return. Distributed Clocks synchronization supports coordinated output updates when timing must remain aligned with other EtherCAT devices.

The housing mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail, allowing the terminal to be installed alongside other EtherCAT I/O modules. Logic power and communication are carried through the Beckhoff E-bus, so a separate ribbon cable is not required between adjacent terminals. The terminal uses a multiplex conversion scheme that processes the output channels sequentially. This arrangement provides multiple analog outputs within a narrow terminal housing while maintaining the individual process data assigned to each channel. The installation position is variable, giving panel layouts flexibility when rail orientation or available cabinet space limits placement options. Short local connections can be routed from the terminal to valve islands, drive amplifiers, and other devices that accept analog commands. The process-image layout also allows the controller to read or write the complete group of output values through a contiguous block of data.
