EL4032 by Beckhoff

The EL4032 analog output terminal is produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It is a two-channel voltage module that converts digital control data from an EtherCAT network into process-level signals for actuators or external controllers. Within an automation station, the part plugs onto a DIN rail beside other terminals, sharing the fieldbus and power through the integrated backplane. Its role is to supply precise analog references so that drives, valves, or measurement circuits can be commanded directly by the real-time EtherCAT system.

Its electronics are fed from the EtherCAT backplane via the E-bus, while field devices draw up to 24 VDC from the front supply contacts. The terminal provides 2 single-ended outputs referenced to the internal ground; each path uses a 12-bit digital-to-analog converter. Output channels are scanned in a multiplexed sequence that balances conversion speed with deterministic timing. The process image presents a 2 × 16-bit analog-output map so the controller can write full-scale words without additional packing overhead. Built-in distributed clocks keep the channel timing aligned to sub-microsecond accuracy across the EtherCAT ring, which supports synchronous motion or closed-loop regulation.

The housing meets IP20 protection, so live conductors are protected against accidental contact when the module is installed on a 35 mm DIN rail. The installation position is variable, allowing horizontal or vertical mounting without derating. Zero-volt feed-through contacts can supply up to 500 mA to downstream terminals, and a separate shield terminal carries up to 100 mA to maintain shield continuity for analog cables. This current routing supports clean wiring practices by keeping signal returns and shield drains close to the source terminal. Because the outputs are single-ended, the common reference must remain within the 24 V supply window to prevent ground shifts in adjacent EtherCAT stations.
