EL4022 by Beckhoff

The EL4022 is an analog output module produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Installed on a standard DIN rail beside other I/O modules, the terminal converts digital process data from an EtherCAT controller into proportional voltage or current signals for actuators and transducers in industrial automation. Its compact housing allows analog outputs to be located inside the machine near the connected field devices, which can reduce the length and complexity of signal wiring.

At ambient temperatures from 0 °C to 55 °C, the terminal maintains an accuracy of <±0.1% FS, and each conversion has a 12-bit resolution to support precise control loops. The internal timing system attains a Distributed Clocks accuracy of less than 100 ns and works with EtherCAT Distributed Clocks so synchronized updates reach field devices with deterministic latency. The module provides 2 single-ended channels, which are mapped in the controller as 2 × 16-bit AO. It uses multiplex sampling, allowing both outputs to share one converter while maintaining signal separation. A supply of up to 24 VDC is connected through the power contacts. The analog stage supports loads of less than 500 ? without exceeding its stated linearity limits.

Electrical isolation of 500 V separates the field side from the EtherCAT bus, helping protect upstream electronics from field-side transients. Power distribution through the backplane is supported by a contact rating of 4 A, allowing current to pass to neighboring terminals without separate power wiring. The housing provides IP20 protection against accidental contact with hazardous internal parts, so the terminal should be installed in a suitable enclosure for protection from dust and moisture. The module snaps onto a 35 mm mounting rail, and its single-ended outputs are referenced to ground to simplify field wiring. When the ambient temperature exceeds 55 °C, only one output channel may remain active. This operating restriction prevents excessive thermal loading when the terminal is used above its normal two-channel temperature range.
