EL4014 by Beckhoff

The EL4014 analog output terminal is produced by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. In distributed control panels, this component provides current outputs that allow a PLC to modulate actuators, valve positions, or reference signals inside industrial machines. Installation is straightforward because the module fastens to a 35 mm DIN mounting rail and draws its field and logic power through the EtherCAT bus coupler and adjacent power contacts.

This terminal provides 4 single-ended current channels. Each output uses a 12-bit resolution, allowing the controller to select 4,096 discrete levels across the configured current range. In each cyclic EtherCAT frame, the terminal uses a 4 × 16-bit AO output process image, allowing all channels to be updated together even though the internal signal generation is multiplexed. The electronics receive power from a 24 VDC supply connected through the neighboring power contact, while the EtherCAT Distributed Clocks feature synchronizes signal changes with network events. A hardware timestamp accuracy of < 100 ns supports deterministic drive and measurement tasks that require tightly coordinated analog references.

The analog stage uses a single-ended ground configuration with one common return, so external wiring should be arranged to prevent ground loops. Under rated operating conditions, the ground terminal can carry up to 500 mA, providing a shared return path for the output channels. Each channel supports resistive loads of < 350 ?; maintaining a load within this limit helps preserve output performance with a total measuring error of ±0.1%. The front housing has an IP20 protection rating, making the module suitable for clean cabinet interiors where the surrounding enclosure prevents unintended contact with live parts.
