EL3154 by Beckhoff

The EL3154 is a four-channel analog input terminal from Beckhoff that belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It installs on an EtherCAT I/O strand and converts single-ended process voltages into digital data so that a PLC or IPC can monitor sensors and transducers within an automation cell. By sharing fieldbus communication and backplane power through the E-Bus, the terminal occupies a single slot while providing multichannel signal acquisition for distributed control systems.

The module provides 4 analog-to-digital channels, each sampled by a converter with a resolution of 16 bits. An internal analog filter limits the input bandwidth to 5 kHz, helping prevent aliasing before the multiplexed sampling stage. Electrical isolation from adjacent terminals has a dielectric strength of up to 30 V, and all inputs share a common conductor to accommodate single-ended field wiring. When enabled, Distributed Clocks synchronize sampling events across the EtherCAT network so that the 4 × 16-bit input process image reaches the controller with deterministic timing. The electronic supply is drawn exclusively from the E-Bus, which reduces external wiring, while the 4 × 8-bit status process image reports diagnostics for each channel. NoCoeStorage support retains configuration data after a power cycle.

The signal section draws up to 40 mA from the bus, simplifying power allocation in dense terminal groups. The housing has a protection rating of IP20 and mounts on a standard 35 mm DIN rail, making the unit suitable for installation in closed control cabinets. Reliable operation is maintained at ambient humidity levels of up to 95% without condensation. The multiplexed sampling system allows the four inputs to be processed within the terminal's compact housing. Its single-ended ground arrangement accommodates process voltage signals that share a common reference. E-Bus power and EtherCAT communication also reduce the number of separate connections required within the terminal assembly.
