The EL3074 is an analog input terminal manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It acts as a field-level device that digitizes process voltages or currents for the control system. By converting sensor signals into cyclic data frames, the terminal lets PLCs and motion controllers supervise temperatures, pressures, or position feedback without separate interface boards. Within industrial automation, the unit clips onto a DIN rail alongside other EtherCAT nodes, creating compact measurement assemblies that share a common backplane supply and a deterministic communication channel.
The terminal provides 4 single-ended analog input channels that can be parameterized for voltage or current ranges through its U/I mode. The single-ended ground reference simplifies wiring in cabinet installations. Each conversion features a resolution of 12 bits, enabling step sizes suited to general process control. Samples are acquired every 1 ms in a multiplexed sequence, and the results are packed into a process image that is 16 bytes wide for cyclic reading by the EtherCAT master. Internal distributed clock circuitry aligns timestamps with a precision of less than 1 µs, so synchronous sampling is maintained across multiple terminals.
For deterministic bus traffic, the EL3074 can participate in EtherCAT cycles as short as 500 µs, allowing it to operate in high-speed motion or safety loops. A front-end filter with a cutoff frequency of 1 kHz limits aliasing when handling noisy transducers, while the input stage tolerates up to 35 V of common-mode potential between the channel and ground. Electrical protection is complemented by an IP20 housing intended for control cabinets. The terminal has a voltage input resistance greater than 200 k?, so it does not significantly load high-impedance sources. Its nonvolatile storage retains user parameters after power cycling, allowing the configured input behavior to resume when power is restored.
