EL3041 by Beckhoff

The EL3041 analog input terminal is produced by Beckhoff and belongs to the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. The unit occupies one slot on a standard bus coupler and converts a current loop signal into digital data for a machine controller. By conditioning a single 0-20 mA process variable, the terminal provides plant operators with real-time feedback required for closed-loop control of pumps, temperature regulators, or position sensors within distributed industrial automation networks.

One analog channel is available, and its conversion hardware delivers a native resolution of 12 bits, while the resulting value is forwarded in a 16 bit format that aligns with EtherCAT process images. Acquisition is performed in a simultaneous mode, so timing is unaffected by bus jitter. The internal filter attenuates frequencies above 1 kHz, limiting noise induced on long sensor lines. Current from the source may vary between 0 mA and 20 mA, allowing measurements across the full input range. The input is single-ended, sharing the module ground with the plant reference. After each scan, the terminal maps two status bytes and two value bytes into the controller's memory for deterministic access.

Electrical isolation between the terminal circuitry and the sensor loop is specified for 30 V, matching typical extra-low-voltage installations. Internal electronics draw power exclusively from the E-Bus, so additional feed lines are unnecessary. The polycarbonate housing snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail, and its IP20 protection category prevents finger ingress yet allows airflow for natural cooling. Because Distributed Clocks are not supported, time-critical tasks must rely on cycle-accurate updates scheduled by the network master rather than on hardware time stamping within the module.
