EL2889 by Beckhoff

The EL2889 is a digital output terminal produced by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for decentralized control architectures, the module inserts into a standard EtherCAT slice and offers output channels that actuate field devices such as solenoids, relays, or indicator lamps. By translating PLC process data into discrete switching signals, the terminal enables compact, cabinet-mounted load control inside industrial automation cells.

This terminal is supplied from a control voltage rail of 24 V DC, and each channel can source up to 0.5 A to its load, so sizing of fusing and external wiring must match that limit. With 1-wire connection technology the supply line is daisy-chained through the slice, minimizing installation space. Output transistors operate in Ground Switching mode; the load is tied to +24 V and the terminal sinks current to ground on command. The electronics are enclosed in a housing certified to IP20, restricting use to protected control cabinets. Inside the process image the device occupies 16 output bits, permitting compact mapping without additional address offset.

All sixteen channel positions correspond to 16 digital outputs that can directly drive Ohmic, Inductive, Lamp loads without additional interface relays. Internal circuitry includes reverse voltage protection to prevent damage if the supply polarity is accidentally reversed, and the transistor stages are short-circuit proof, allowing automatic recovery after fault clearance without module replacement. These protections widen the usable range for mixed-load distribution panels where lamp inrush and coil energy can vary. By combining load flexibility with fault-tolerant output stages, the terminal fits series-wired power distribution schemes common in modular machine designs.
