EL2258 by Beckhoff

The EL2258 is a digital output terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It mounts on a DIN rail and links directly to the EtherCAT fieldbus so that a controller can drive 24 V actuators with deterministic timing. In industrial automation, it translates network telegrams into individual switching actions across eight channels, giving machinery precise on-and-off control without external relay boards.

Each terminal provides 8 discrete outputs that operate from a 24 VDC supply. A push-pull stage sources or sinks up to 0.5 A per channel, allowing the module to handle resistive, inductive, or lamp loads, while reverse-polarity circuitry prevents damage if the power supply is wired incorrectly. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, so the unit is intended for installation inside a control cabinet or another suitable enclosure. Field wiring follows a two-wire scheme, and the internal output stage uses a push-pull design. Distributed-clock support allows the EtherCAT master to align switching events to within 1 ns of a network reference, which supports synchronized motion and high-speed inspection processes. The terminal accepts up to ten switching commands per PLC cycle, allowing it to support applications that require frequent output changes.

The terminal stores a history of 32 events per channel in its local buffer, allowing the controller to verify the execution of time-critical commands. Its housing is only 12 mm wide, conserving panel space when multiple modules are mounted together on the same DIN rail. Each timestamp uses a 32-bit format, providing a consistent data structure for recording absolute time values within the available range. The terminal can process up to 10 timestamped edges during a single make-to-switch-function window. This local processing capability allows scheduled output transitions to occur independently of normal PLC scan timing and network delays.
