EL2202-0100 by Beckhoff

The EL2202-0100 is a digital output terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for incorporation into EtherCAT I/O assemblies, the module translates real-time fieldbus commands into electrical switching signals that drive on-machine actuators and indicator devices. It attaches to adjacent terminals through integrated backplane contacts, creating a compact chain of modules that share bus communication and field power along the DIN rail.

It provides 2 digital outputs that operate at a nominal 24 VDC. The outputs use a push-pull driver stage capable of sourcing or sinking up to 0.5 A per channel, so standard resistive, inductive, or lamp loads can be switched directly without external relays. An internal protection circuit limits fault current to 4 A for 150 µs. After this short interval, the affected channel shuts down, reducing thermal stress on wiring and upstream power supplies. Signal integrity is reinforced by output cycle variability of < 100 ns, while the on and off transitions remain below 1 µs, supporting precisely timed positioning or dosing tasks on high-speed machinery.

The terminal aligns its switching edge with the EtherCAT distributed-clock domain, and the outputs can be started by SYNC0. Distributed-clock support maintains sub-microsecond timing correlation between nodes across an entire machine line. In the process image, the module occupies 4 bits, simplifying address allocation in the PLC and keeping the update load low on the bus coupler. The communication electronics draw 130 mA from the E-bus, while the field side requires 30 mA plus the current drawn by each connected load. The enclosure has an IP20 protection class for cabinet installation. Continuous operation is permitted at ambient humidity levels up to 95% without condensation.
