EL2084 by Beckhoff

The EL2084 digital output terminal is manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Designed for machine and process automation, the unit provides four individually switched channels that deliver 24 V control power to field devices such as contactors or pilot lamps. By mounting directly beside other EtherCAT terminals, it allows a controller to expand its discrete outputs without additional gateways. The internal I/O circuitry is energized through the shared backplane, which helps minimize cabinet wiring during installation.

Each channel supplies up to 0.5 A at a nominal 24 VDC, making the terminal suitable for resistive loads, inductive actuators, or small lamp circuits. The switch path uses 0 V ground switching, so the positive supply remains connected while the terminal sinks current on command. The four green LEDs indicate the states of the corresponding outputs and assist with fault tracing. In the process image, the module occupies four output bits, allowing the PLC to write one bit per channel through the EtherCAT frame. No address setting is required because the device position in the terminal strand determines its logical mapping. Integrated short-circuit protection disconnects a channel if its load draws excessive current, helping prevent a fault from disrupting the bus.

The electronics receive power through the E-Bus, eliminating the need for separate 24 V supply lines for the logic circuitry. The terminal snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail and supports a variable installation position, which provides flexibility when enclosure space is limited. Its IP20 protection rating is suitable for installation inside a cabinet that protects the terminal from water and unintended contact. All parameters appear automatically in TwinCAT System Manager, where users can assign symbolic names, connect the four-bit output image to control tasks, and configure watchdog times. Channel status remains visible locally through the indicators while output data is exchanged cyclically over EtherCAT. The fuse-free short-circuit response protects individual channels without requiring replaceable protective components.
