EL1512 by Beckhoff

The EL1512 is a single-channel pulse counter terminal manufactured by Beckhoff for the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It connects incremental sensors to an EtherCAT I/O segment and forwards position or flow information to the controller, providing a compact interface between field devices and the real-time network in industrial automation. Three counting modes are available: one up/down mode and two one-way modes, allowing the controller to select signed or unidirectional counting according to the connected application.

The counter has a depth of 32 bits, so its internal register can accumulate up to 4,294,967,295 pulses before rollover. A maximum counting frequency of 1 kHz supports slow- to medium-speed transducers used for monitoring motion, quantity, or flow. The control electronics draw 130 mA from the E-bus, while the sensor input draws only 5 mA, minimizing the electrical load placed on the source device. Electrical isolation of 500 V separates the field wiring from the backplane and reduces the transfer of unwanted electrical disturbances between the two sides. The input circuits follow the EN 61131-2 Type 1 logic profile, ensuring compatibility with standard 24 V proximity switches. The low input level is below 5 VDC, helping prevent false counts when the sensor output is close to ground potential.

The terminal snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail for installation with other EtherCAT terminals inside a control cabinet. Its housing has an IP20 rating and is intended for protected indoor enclosures where it is shielded from moisture and excessive contamination. Operation requires a field supply of 24 VDC, which is commonly available for industrial sensors and control equipment. A high input level is recognized at voltages above 15 VDC, providing headroom for voltage drops along the sensor wiring. The installation position is variable, which allows the terminal to be arranged conveniently within compact I/O assemblies. The module does not provide CoE storage, so its configuration data remains in the controller rather than being stored locally in the terminal.
