EL1262 by Beckhoff

The EL1262 is a digital input interface manufactured by Beckhoff within the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It captures switch and sensor states on a machine and relays them to a controller through the EtherCAT fieldbus. The terminal slots into a compact, modular I/O rack, allowing additional signals to be connected without rewiring the entire control panel. This design is suitable for synchronized packaging lines, material sorters, and other time-critical automation systems.

The EL1262 functions as a Digital Input Terminal, so each channel accepts logic-level input signals and does not source output power. The terminal operates with a microcycle time of 1 µs, allowing it to sample fresh data every microsecond for precise event tracking. When an application requires finer temporal resolution, the terminal can use a sampling factor of up to 1000x between two network updates. The Oversampling mode stores these sample bursts locally and transmits them during the next available EtherCAT interval. Whether standard or oversampled scanning is used, the payload is forwarded once per bus cycle. This timing supports deterministic synchronization with motion axes and other distributed I/O nodes.

Process images use the Array Package format, in which each array element corresponds to the bit state of a connected sensor. The module buffers these bits in a State Array, allowing the PLC to read a coherent snapshot even when the physical input lines change asynchronously. ScopeView accepts terminal data from all revisions, which supports diagnostic and trending tasks across installations using different product generations. The EL EtherCAT Terminals format provides consistent housing dimensions and push-in connectors throughout the platform. Its modular arrangement also allows the terminal to be installed beside compatible I/O modules while preserving an orderly signal path through the rack.
