EL1259 by Beckhoff

The EL1259 is an EtherCAT I/O terminal manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. Intended for installation in industrial control systems, the device combines discrete sensing and actuation so that cabinet wiring can be consolidated through a single fieldbus link. It provides deterministic, timestamped data to the controller, allowing tight control loops and coordinated motion in automation lines that require millisecond or submillisecond response times. These capabilities support time-sensitive operations in packaging, assembly, and test machinery.

The input bank offers 8 channels that draw only 3 mA per channel from the field supply, keeping sensor loading low. On the output side, a corresponding set of eight push-pull transistors can source up to 0.5 A per point without external drivers, allowing direct connection of small solenoids or indicator lamps. The terminal operates from a control voltage of 24 VDC. For time-critical applications, every edge is captured and reproduced with a resolution of 1 ns, enabling precise control of lasers, cameras, or valve manifolds. Signal exchange with the master is synchronized through distributed clocks so that simultaneous events across multiple terminals remain aligned.

Each channel can buffer 32 events locally, helping prevent data loss during periods of heavy network traffic. The housing has a width of only 12 mm, and the module snaps onto a 35 mm DIN mounting rail to conserve cabinet space. The enclosure has an IP20 protection rating, so installation inside a suitable cabinet is necessary in dusty or wet areas. The internal E-bus draws 130 mA, which must be considered when sizing the power feed for long terminal assemblies. Signal wiring uses the 1-wire connection technique, reducing the number of conductors required for each field device. The push-pull output stage maintains consistent signal levels throughout the rated voltage range.
