EL1014 by Beckhoff

The EL1014 is a digital input module manufactured by Beckhoff as part of the EL EtherCAT Terminals series. It occupies one slot on a DIN-rail coupler and translates discrete field signals into the distributed EtherCAT process image. Within an automation cell, the terminal reports the on/off status of sensors, limit switches, or pushbuttons to the controller. This arrangement provides deterministic response times without requiring standalone I/O enclosures.

Signal wiring uses the 3-wire connection principle, so the supply, reference, and sensor connections are grouped for straightforward installation. Each channel draws only 3 mA of input current, allowing proximity sensors or optically isolated contacts to operate without overloading the upstream supply rail. A built-in input filter with a response time of 10 µs suppresses contact bounce and noise spikes shorter than that threshold, supporting reliable edge detection in electrically noisy cabinets. The electronics use a nominal input level of 24 VDC, which matches the control voltage commonly used in machine panels. With 4 inputs available, one terminal can monitor several field devices while maintaining short bus update times.

During each EtherCAT cycle, the module contributes four input bits to the process image, allowing the controller to read every channel as an individual Boolean value without additional decoding. The housing has an IP20 protection rating, providing protection against contact with hazardous internal parts but no protection against water. The terminal must therefore be installed inside a suitable control enclosure that protects it from moisture and excessive contamination. Operating power reaches the electronics through power contacts, allowing adjacent terminals to share the same supply bus and reducing external wiring. The front-panel LEDs display bus activity and the state of each channel, which simplifies visual status checks and fault isolation. The compact terminal format also allows additional EtherCAT I/O modules to be installed beside the unit on the same DIN rail.
