EJ9001 by Beckhoff

The EJ9001 is a passive EtherCAT plug-in produced by Beckhoff for the EJ EtherCAT Plug-ins series. It serves as a mechanical placeholder that occupies unused module positions on a signal distribution board, preserving address order and physical spacing during machine assembly. By filling gaps, the part keeps the backplane power and communication path continuous, supporting cabinet-based automation systems that distribute EtherCAT through a shared board interconnect.

The EJ9001 functions strictly as a placeholder module, but it is still detected on the network. Its electrical interface consists of rear pin contacts, and the electrical connection relies on these contacts and the board interface rather than discrete wiring. Through these contacts, the device reports itself as active, yet it exchanges no cyclic process data. Because the added node draws supply current, the module changes the current input, which must be included in the coupler's power budget. Mechanical attachment follows the signal distribution board concept, and installation is completed by pressing the housing into the plated holes along the board edge. Reserve slots can be used at the end of the assembly, while empty slots within the module group can be filled to keep channel numbering consecutive.

When installed, the module must be placed inside a control cabinet or enclosure because it lacks external sealing and independent heat-dissipation features. The faceplate is molded from gray thermoplastic, allowing nonfunctional spacers to be distinguished from active process modules during visual inspection. The module has no optional coding pins underneath, which leaves the slot available for future reconfiguration but requires careful orientation during board layout. Series connection is permitted, allowing multiple placeholders to occupy adjacent slots without creating breaks in the EtherCAT backbone or changing addressing offsets. The plug-in format eliminates the need for separate field wiring at an unused position. Its board-mounted design also maintains the physical alignment required for neighboring EJ modules and their shared electrical contacts.
